Shannon Brock, a former wine writer of ours and an instructor at the New York Wine & Culinary Center, assumed ownership of Silver Thread Vineyard earlier this year with husband Paul. But the sustainable vines on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake go back to the ’80s, and before that, there were Iroquois peach orchards grown on the hillside.
Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and a blend of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon called Blackbird are made here, but we’re turning our attention to the Gewurztraminer 2008. It can be found nearby on the menu at Dano’s on Seneca, alongside the restaurant’s hearty Heuriger-style (meaning Eastern-Austrian wine tavern) dishes.
It’s spicy and floral, perfect to match with light meats like chicken or turkey, but also light and fruity, which would work to cut spicy Thai food you might be craving with this unseasonably warm winter weather we’re having. Either way, Silver Thread is offering free shipping through the end of the month on cases, so this could make for nice gifts, too. $15, silverthreadwine.com
