Maxie’s Supper Club and Oyster Bar

By Carly Browning

If you’re like me, a Midwestern transplant in the heart of New York, you probably find yourself craving the comfort of soul food. Even if you’re a native East Coast resident, eating at Maxie’s Supper Club and Oyster Bar in Ithaca makes you believe you’re eating food straight from the South. They’re open from 4pm until late, with live music on Tuesdays and Sundays—think smooth and jazzy soul with a down-home feel. The signature dish here is Jambalaya: a spicy classic rice dish bursting with flavors and plenty of goodies. If you’re not so into spice, order it with a fried egg on top to temper some of the zest. The menu also features big ol’ sandwiches, vegetarian options (like the Fried Green Tomato Po’ Boy) and mouthwatering appetizers that may cause you to order more than you can eat. Try the Cajun Popcorn (fried crawfish) or the Peel-n-Eat Shrimp, perfectly seasoned and served chilled. I personally cannot step foot into the restaurant without ordering the Shrimp and Grits with andouille sausage, Tasso sauce and crème fraîche (I’m one of those people who can’t take the heat). Portions are big so be sure to plan accordingly for leftovers. As if it could get better, Maxie’s has some killer deals: $10 off any bottle of wine every Monday, $2 kids meals every Wednesday, and half priced oysters and clams everyday from 4 pm-6 pm. Head over to comply with their catch phrase: “Put some South in yo’ mouth!”
