Behind the Bottle:
Red Cat
Did you know that Hazlitt 1852’s three core sweet wine labels, including Red Cat, make up nearly 80 percent of the winery’s total sales? In our current May/June 2015 issue, Amelia Sauter chats with Doug Hazlitt and Leigh Hazlitt Triner to learn more about the ever-popular sweet red.
The Hazlitt family has been farming grapes on the shores of Seneca Lake for six generations. They are also early contenders in the region’s winemaking industry: Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards is celebrating its 30th year in Hector. With siblings Doug Hazlitt and Leigh Hazlitt Triner at the helm, they’ve opened a second location in Naples, expanded their vinifera and native wine offerings, and most recently added hard cider to their lineup. But they are best known for Red Cat, a sweet ‘party wine’ that draws countless people to the wine trail for a taste and an experience.
