The Pleasures of U-Pick
Summer would undoubtedly be lackluster were it not for fresh, roadside goods, and many Finger Lakes area farms will even let you pick the goods yourself. Arguably, some of our best food memories are those that start with selecting our own produce; a peach crostata somehow tastes better when you can remember how the trees looked where the peaches were picked—was it raining, who was there to help pick the right ones, or pick you up if the best were out of reach? Each participating farm has its own schedule and set of rules, but it usually goes like this: pick what you want, pay by the pound. Cutting out the middlemen can leave you with a good-size box for less than you’d pay at the grocery store. Look for blackberries, strawberries and currants at Grisamore Farms in Cayuga County, raspberries, cherries and plums at Whittier Fruit Farm in Monroe, and loads of other seasonal fruits across the area now through August—and some farms even allow u-pick through November for squash season. U-picking is surely a seasonal treat for locals, but also a great hands-on way for visitors to experience the land and for kids to see where their food comes from.
