5 Finger Lakes Winter CSA Shares

While the winter months in the Finger Lakes can seem grey and barren, there is some good news: you can still access colorful, flavorful, and nutritious produce from local farms! We’ve complied a list of farms that have winter CSA shares below. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and it is a partnership whereby consumers become “shareholders” in a farm’s CSA business and can receive a weekly or monthly supply of products from that farm. There are several different types of CSAs and you can learn more about them here.

Finger Lakes Winter CSAs

The Full Plate Farm Collective: This organic produce CSA involves both Stick and Stone Farm and Remembrance Farm which use the partnership to feed the Ithaca, Trumansburg, Danby and Lansing communities. They offer 23 week summer shares and 12 week winter shares. The winter shares are delivered on Thursdays and run from December 3rd 2020 to March 4th 2021. Shagbark Gardens: This farm in Danby, New York with a focus on regenerative vegetable and herb production is offering a winter CSA that features greens and roots from its hoop houses, according to a Nov. 2nd Facebook post. Spaghetti squash, red Maria potatoes, carrots, a lettuce mix, arugula, a Hakurei Turnip bunch, and more are included in the share. To learn more visit: shagbarkgardens.com.

Plowbreak Farm: This certified organic farm produces diversified vegetables and is located at 4106 Covert Road in Burdett N.Y. Aaron Munzer and Kara Cusolito who own the farm have been feeding their community within a 30-mile radius since 2012, according to Plowbreak Farm’s website. They are committed to practices that promote soil health and they never use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides that can degrade the environment. Six Circles Farm: Located at 1491 Caywood Road Lodi, N.Y., this CSA offers double shares every other week in January, February, and March. The CSA also has a weekly pickup option at the Ithaca Winter Market. The winter share includes a wide selection of root crops in addition to products made on the farm, and members can expect to receive fresh kale in January and even later into the winter months! Fellenz Family Farm: For the fall/winter share, this organic farm in Phelps, N.Y. offers winter squash, fall radishes, apples, potatoes, onions, celeriac, brussel sprouts, leeks, onions, cabbage, kale, beets, and more! Although the shares are sold out for the 2020 season, you can find Fellenz Family Farm at the Brighton Farmers’ Market located at 1150 Winton Road in S. Rochester, N.Y. on Sundays through December 20.
