Meet Your (Wine) Maker: Peter Becraft, Anthony Road Wine Company

I am so fortunate to have an employer who trusts me 100%.  They provide me with all the encouragement and resources to help me best express their site, their home.  I have a great view from the office and I have a 2.5 mile commute.

Searching for a place where the water tasted like wine, Peter made his way to the Finger Lakes in 2006.  Harboring among the vines at Anthony Road, he never left.  Years of apprenticing gave way to opportunity in 2014, when he took over chief expression of site responsibilities at Anthony Road Wine Company.  With a healthy respect for the region’s past, presently Peter forges the excitement of the Finger Lakes’ future. We hope you enjoy reading his answers to our questions!

Why did you choose to make wine here?

At the time I was offered the opportunity to work a harvest at Anthony Road I would have worked anywhere in New York.  I was fully aware of the quality wines being produced in the state and I was eager to just get involved.  By default the Finger Lakes chose me.

What’s your background and education in winemaking?

For my winemaking education I attended Virginia Commonwealth University and majored in Fine Arts with a concentration in sculpture.  This degree has served me well, for artists are in tune with their senses, very passionate about what they do and very used to being critiqued.  I apprenticed under Johannes Reinhardt in the cellar for about eight years.  Practical experience has served me well.

What is your favorite activity outside of winemaking?

I am a passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club and most of my extra time is spent following anything that pertains to them and to all of the going ons in world football.

Music choice for harvest vs. bottling?

Harvest is an action sport and requires an array of genres and tempos to help influence the mood and provoke creativity.  Music is for the people so it is important to give your crew the opportunity to be the dj.  Bottling is a mind numbing activity for me so I mostly listen to podcasts to make sure my brain is still working.

What do you love about where you work?

I am so fortunate to have an employer who trusts me 100%.  They provide me with all the encouragement and resources to help me best express their site, their home.  I have a great view from the office and I have a 2.5 mile commute.
